Friends of Baucau - movie fundraiser

Interested in seeing the new Adam Elliot animation Memoir of Snail?

Friends of Baucau is having a fundraiser night at Westgarth Cinema coming up on Thursday 17 October. See the poster below for details.

You can book in via Trybooking or scan the QR code.

You possibly know that Alphington Community Centre and the Yarra and Darebin neighbourhood houses have a long-standing relationship with Friends of Baucau … I was lucky enough to go over to Timor-Leste a few years ago with them, to learn more about women’s empowerment and community development on a shoestring, in an international context.

There are similar friendship groups dotted across Victoria that support community empowerment in towns and cities across Timor-Leste. They are wonderful … and make a real difference for our international neighbours who live in the poorest country in our region.

I will be ant the movie and look forward to seeing you too hopefully.

Holidays are here

What a great and busy week we just had.

We saw Touch at Movie Club🍿. It was a beautiful film - you should go see it! Iceland, Japan and England … what an inspiring combo of places.

On Wednesday we had the Meet the Candidates session - 4 of the 8 candidates in our ward came along and it was great to hear what they had to say and understand their differences and similarities. About 50 people came along which was super.

On Thursday night we did life drawing as part of Alphington Arts. It was so fun! And it was excellent to get out our easels and dust off the charcoal - supplies that have been stored for years … Thanks Clare for organising this.

On Friday we had a lovely community lunch to finish off the term - with delicious food supplied by our CWA friends. Thank you. Thank you!

And … our AAA Arts group finished a little installation in the garden near the community shed. Check it out if you pass by.

We’re now closed for 2 weeks. If you need to get in contact with us please email.

Also note our upcoming workshops and short courses in Term 4 including:

  • Street Photography

  • Family Fitness

  • Active Adults

  • AAA Bowls

  • AAA Arts

  • Crunch - creative lunch

  • Alphington Arts

  • Line Dancing

  • Beginners Ukulele

  • Men’s Group

We also of course have Daniel teaching guitar, Yoyo teaching violin, Martina offering counselling services … and lots more.

Check out our full program below!

Happy school holidays. Good luck with footy grand final if your team has made it through (shame about the Tigers but … there’s always next year right?).

See you in the other side!

Street photography

With Darebin Parklands around the corner, a raft of heritage buildings dotted through our streets, plane trees in their glory and the ultra urban grunge of a train line on our doorstep, the upcoming street photography workshop in October should be fabulous.

Starting at ACC, join photographer Suzanne Phoenix for a lovely, family friendly walk around our neighbourhood with your camera or phone on Saturday 19th October 10am-1pm. The cost is $48.

This workshop is suitable for all ages. Children will need to be supervised by their paying adult. Please click this link to learn more about Suzanne and join the walk in Alphington in October!

Please note that we need a minimum number of people to attend in order to run our workshops.

This week

We are coming up to school holidays, which start at the end of this week - but we have a packed agenda before then. In addition to all the regular things we have:

  • Preserves Group - Tuesday at 1pm. We’ll be cooking some tomato chutney and finishing off our lemons if you are keen to come along.

  • Movie Club 🍿 - Tuesday 6pm we’ll be meeting at Westgarth Cinema to see Touch. It looks like a fabulous film and anyone can join our movie club!

  • Meet The Candidates - Wednesday at 7pm to meet the local ward candidates for the Darebin Council election. Find out more here.

  • Alphington Arts - Thursday 7.30pm. We have life drawing coming up. Clare has organised a model.

Last week we had a great time with our impromptu ‘Lemon Cleaner DIY’ workshop and a lovely visit from our neighbourhood house colleagues on Wednesday. We also had Jill Post, who is the Greens candidate for Yarra pop in for lunch on Friday. It is always great to share what we do.

For more information on all of these things check out the posts and photos below.

Term 4 starts on Monday 7 October - and we look forward to seeing you then.

I hope you have a lovely week.
