Women in the shed bookings open

Are you keen to join our Women in the Shed program for 2023? We’re now taking bookings for Term 1 and Term 2. Just head to our website here to book in.

It is a wonderful 6 week program that runs on Thursdays for 6 weeks. In the course you will be introduced to all the basic tools in a shed and will get to practise using them across a series of projects.

So … you’ll finish the course with a whole lot of new skills, loads of confidence and some lovely creations.

Women in the Shed is run by Maylei Hunt and is a really popular program. So if you are interested to join up you should book in sooner rather than later! If you miss out on a place, please email us at info@alphington.org.au and we will be able to add you to the waiting list.

Next year ...

Time flies when you are having fun!

We’re now putting together the program at ACC for next year and as always, we are interested in your ideas.

If you have a skill you’d like to share through a weekend workshop or through a regular activity please let us know (eg. our Visible Mending Club runs monthly thanks to Serene offering to share her skills).

If you have been to a course or program somewhere else that you think would be super for our community please let us know (eg. it was thanks to recommendation that we met Gordon who now runs our Sewing Machine and Overlocker Maintenance workshops annually ).

Just email info@alphington.org.au or give us a call on 9499 7227 and we can talk about how to make it happen!

And as a taster … new things on our radar for next year include:

  • Movie Club - once a month on Tuesday afternoons we’ll head over to Westgarth Cinema on the train to watch a film together.

  • Podcasting 101 - a short ACFE course (we have funding to support this program thanks to RCLC - our lovely neighbourhood house colleagues in Richmond)

If you are interested in joining in these new activities just look out for our new program that will provide details of how to register. It should be out by early December …

New page

Thanks Annie.

On the weekend local artist Annie Bolitho ran her New Page workshop here at ACC. Adults and children joined in this intergenerational creating experience to explore hand crafted bookmaking and page making … using flowers such as nasturtium and violets to create prints and learning how to then build up layers of collage and add stamping to make gorgeous art books and diaries.

We hope everyone was inspired.

Cultural cooking - Indian condiments

Manu will be back this term with another cultural cooking class - teaching you how to make tamarind (sweet and sour) chutney, green chutney (with mint and coriander), and raita variations.

We all love the sauces and dips that elevate our cooking from good to great. So don’t miss this chance to learn how to make your own at home to make your next Indian meal exceptional.

Visible mending monthly

Hi Kalimna here. Last weekend I attended the wonderful slow stitch workshop and was so pleased to take some photos while soaking in the calm vibe whilst learning all about this relaxing and creative process.

I was totally inspired by Serene’s personal style. She showed us some really cool things she had transformed with her creative slow stitching. And her overall artistic flair is infectious.

Did you know that Serene is also hosting monthly visible mending gatherings here at the Alphington Community Centre?

They are on the first Saturday of each month in September, October and November from 10am-11:30am.

You can book a place here.

It is $15 to attend. Bring along your project and work on mending your items beautifully with the help and guidance of Serene and enjoy the company of other like-minded creative repairers.
