Movie Club! This Tuesday

We’re kicking off our new monthly Tuesday Movie Club on the 14 February and we’re going to see a romcom, from the makers of Bridget Jones Diary and Love Actually etc. So why not join us for a very romantic Valentine’s Day activity!

What’s Love Got To Do with It? is on at Westgarth Cinema at 12.45pm. The cost is $12.

If you want to come with us you’ll need to be at Alphington Community Centre at 12pm to catch the 12.07pm train at Alphington Station. We’ll arrive at Westgarth Station at 12.12pm. This gives us 30 minutes to walk over to the cinema and buy tickets etc.

If you plan to make your own way there that is great too! Just let us know so we can look out for you when we arrive.

If you are interested in joining in this activity please email us here. We propose to create a Movie Club What’s App group, so that we can easily organise this new ongoing monthly activity!

Here’s the official promo for the movie!

A pitch perfect ballad of emotions, this romantic comedy follows a filmmaker who decides to document her best friend’s journey toward arranged marriage.

Moving between London and Lahore, this is a story of love, friendship, tradition and iconoclasm. How do you find lasting love in today's world? For documentary-maker and dating app addict Zoe (Lily James, Rebecca, Darkest Hour), swiping right has only delivered an endless stream of Mr. Wrongs, to her eccentric mother Cath's (Emma Thompson, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) dismay.

For childhood friend and neighbour Kaz (Shazad Latif, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), the answer is to follow his parents' example and opt for an arranged (or "assisted") marriage to a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan. As Zoe films his journey to marry a stranger, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from a profoundly different approach to finding love.

Striking a touching balance between respect for cultural customs and belief in the power of romance, What’s Love Got to Do with It? offers an impassioned take on the notion of love, romance and finding that special someone.

Want to join a book club?

We have a few spots available in our book clubs for next year if you are interested in joining one!

Please note that the first meetings for our book clubs will be in February - and our office is closed until the first week of February - so if you join up now we will get your paperwork and you will get a spot - but Kalimna wont be processing the paperwork or getting in touch until she is back at her desk.

Our book clubs are a partnership with Darebin Libraries and are a great way to meet a lovely cross section of people from the local community.

It costs $60 a year to join. You can book in online here.

Neighbourhood watch

Hi Leanne here. The Big Steal is one of my favourite nostalgic Australian movies (topped off by Love Serenade).

Throughout March Yarra City Arts and Umbrella Entertainment are hosting ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ - sunset movies 🎥 🍿 in the linear park north of Park Street, where it intersects with Nicholson Street, in North Fitzroy.

The Merger is coming up this weekend … a movie about resurrecting a country footy team (it is a movie I’ve always wanted to see). There’s live music and food just around the corner at the Nicholson Street shops … and the weather forecast is looking pretty good 👍.

Maybe you’d like to go too?

Book clubs

We run 5 book clubs here at ACC and have a couple of spots available in the 3rd Monday and Tuesday of the month groups along with one spot in Thursday evening in 2022.

So … if you are interested in joining a community book club here is your chance.

It costs $60 per year to join. Your group will read 10 self selected books. The book sets with notes are provided by Darebin Libraries.

Keen? You can join here.

Next weekend ... community fun at ACC

We’ve got a big weekend coming up at ACC with the Christmas Makers Market on Saturday from 10am-1pm, and the Alphington Open Studios event also on.

If you’d like to pop past on Friday night between 5-7pm you can help us celebrate the opening of the salon exhibition at ACC that is part of the Alphington Open Studios weekends. Our salon exhibition includes works from all the artists with their studios open over the next two weekends plus works by other local artists. It should give you a lovely snapshot of what’s on offer … Share a drink with us, admire the art, collect a map (if you haven’t got one in your letterbox already) and then plan to take a neighbourhood walk and visit local artists in their studios over the next two weekends. Find out more here.

Then come back on Saturday morning for our Christmas Makers Market. We have 25 stallholders who have been busy making lovely things. This is a great opportunity for you to buy local and support your neighbours creative endeavours this year for Christmas presents.

We hope you can make it!
