Lovely to have the Minister for Women and Minister for Education Natalie Hutchins and local MP Kat Theophanous at Peer Support Playgroup on Tuesday.

We talked about how neighbourhood houses started as women’s organisations (and Natalie took a tour around the centre) before Natalie chatted to some mums about managing work and the juggle with family, childcare etc. - issues exacerbated for families living with disability.

She also talked o Sarah who volunteers here and is completing her VCE as a mature aged student part time through CAE.

Thanks for organising Kat. It is super for our community to have direct, thoughtful and meaningful conversations at this level.

Warm august nights

A CREATIVE EXPERIMENT

Inspired by David Whyte's Three Illusions, local artist Luke Edwards is hosting Warm August Nights for two nights in August at the Alphington Bowls Club (Wednesday 17 & 24). These evenings will explore the illusions through music and word, dive deep into heartbreak and consider the way of wholehearted living. Tickets available here.

It sounds pretty interesting right? Isn’t it fabulous that ABC supports local artists to create these opportunities in our local area.

Staying at home for longer

This week the Alphington CWA is joining forces with Latrobe Community Health Services to run a session exploring how to access help through My Aged Care.

This is the program that gives older people the flexibility to stay at home for longer through government funded help services.

The information session is right here at ACC on Wednesday 10 August at 7.30pm. No need to book, just come along if you are interested.

The session will look at:

  • What is My Aged Care

  • ·How can My Aged Care help you stay at home for longer

  • Eligibility Criteria for getting help

  • Registering with My Aged Care

  • Details on accessing services under the Commonwealth Home Support Program

  • What’s included in a Home Care Package and what to look for in a provider

  • Other available services for older persons.

It will run for about 40-50 minutes depending on the number of questions.

Latrobe Community Health Service is a not for profit organisation committed to taking care of the vulnerable members of our communities with 47 offices across Victoria.

Winter art exhibition

We had a lovely night last Friday for our opening. Around 60 locals came along which was fabulous, and more popped in over the weekend.

25 artists were part of the event, and we thank Sharyn Madder, Beatrice Magalotti and Wendy Roach for hanging the exhibition.

We’d also like to thank Yarra City Arts for the seed funding to get this regular event in our calendar up and running and also thank the Community Bank on Queens Parade for funding the gallery equipment install.

We have so many talented artists in our community. If you are keen to see more local art in real life or join us for another fun community event (being the opening night) keep an eye out for the Alphington Open Studios Weekend coming up on the last weekend in November!
