Exploring our rail trails

Reimagining your next holiday? I think we’re all searching around for things a little closer to home that we haven’t done before.

Like exploring some of Victoria’s rail trails.

Rail trails are shared-use paths along former/abandoned railway corridors. They are usually managed by local community management groups and local councils and are for the enjoyment of the general public. They can be used for a range of purposes including walking, cycling and horse riding. And they can take you to some lovely little out of the way places, like Timboon (enjoy icecream and/or a fabulous lunch at the Distillery for your efforts).

There is a gorgeous one out at Warburton. One at Bright. One out at Port Fairy. To name a few. A handful are over 100km long - suitable for a bike riding adventure. Others are just a couple of km long and would make a lovely walk. And there’s a whole host in between. Here is a link to a wonderful list of rail trails to be found in Victoria.

We hope on these warm days post any lockdowns you will find the opportunity to gather your bikes/walking shoes/horses (should you have one or two in the paddock!) and enjoy. Maybe a fun family idea for the next school holidays?

You may have seen these locals on 9 News last week. They were happily waylaid to help the Orbost locals spruik the value of the Orbost rail trail. Read more here.
