ACC Online

connecting our community

Welcome to ACC Online

Well we certainly live in strange times don't we ... and lots has changed very quickly. Luckily ... at Alphington Community Centre, change is our thing. And we are definitely of the view that if one door closes another opens.

And so whilst we're sorry we've had to cease programming face to face (and we're looking forward to seeing you all again soon) in the interim we're pleased to say welcome! welcome! to the ACC Online Social Club.

We are anticipating that we'll start off slow and ramp up as we go along.

We'll begin by sharing some ideas about how to keep busy, some news about new things popping up, some ideas of how local businesses are adapting and ways we can still interact in the 'hood as we go about physically distancing (whilst keeping socially connected).

We'll welcome your ideas, think about how we can best support each other if things get tougher, and look into building groups and communities with common interests.

Our thought is that we can stilll work together, listen to each other, have a laugh, share ideas, be kind to everyone, and care for the most vulnerable in our community in this tricky new world.

And we want to make sure everyone feels welcome - just like real life at ACC! So, even if you're outside the immediate 'hood, know that you can join in. If you feel like Alphington Community Centre is part of your community sphere, then you are most welcome here too!

Here we go ...

LATELY (we've been) ...

  • Thinking about how we can help the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre more. They need volunteers under 60 years of age, and also need food donations to continue (ACC will remain a collection point for them - we have reinstated an outside cupboard for drop offs - just inside the gate of the back garden).

  • Contemplating if there are any of our existing groups that could form online as things ratchet up (perhaps a ukulele group could use an app like zoom to meet). Let us know if you are interested or have suggestions.

  • Wondering if there are other group ideas out there (perhaps a movie club where everyone watches something on Netflix or a TV show and has a chat the next day via WhatsApp, or a 'pub choir' type group could form to sing together - but at home using zoom or another app).

  • Admiring local businesses adapting such as this. We'd love to hear from others who are changing and adapting for the times.

  • Grateful for people connecting with us, such as the folks from Sustain Australia at the Melbourne Food Hub who are wondering if anyone needs their excess fresh food (please let us know if you or a neighbour might need a delivery and we'll link you up).

  • Hopeful when we see things like this

  • Wasting some time watching this. If you cant get to the zoo, why shouldn't it come to you?

  • Inspired by the ingenuity of online innovation like this. Isol-aid is a great idea!

  • Planning to make some time to learn how to cook from one of Italy's top chefs

  • Delighted that our new mural looks so ace (and is nearly finished).  We hope you love it too, and on a side note we are very pleased that we are supporting local artists (it's the time for it right?). Show-off photos below!
